Virtual Water – What is that?

Virtual water is the amount of water required for example for the manufacture of a pair of jeans or for the steak at the butcher shop or for the loaf of bread at the bakery.

The manufacture of clothing out of cotton has an enormous impact with a worldwide average of 11,000 l/kg of virtual water. 85 percent of the water volume is required for the production of cotton and thereof far more than half for watering the fields. The remaining 15 percent is needed for all further processing steps. Cotton production requires 50 billion m³ of virtual water worldwide and thus 3.5 percent of the entire volume needed for crops. For a little snack between meals, the water footprint is quite substantial! Beef patties of 150 g require the greatest proportion of this water volume (ca. 2,200 l). In contrast, a hearty hotel breakfast reaches almost 1,300 l of virtual water.

Wasser 3.0 Advice

It is time to reconsider our habits! That means that also the consumer, the "user", can protect the water in other countries.

Environmental Protection – What can everyone do?

You can also become part of Wasser 3.0. Get involved, because each and every one of us is responsible for protecting the environment.

Start at home by scrutinizing your day-to-day activities, waste prevention, waste separation, and choosing products from your region. Use public transportation and cycle instead of taking your car, not only the environment, but also your fitness and health will thank you. It is the small steps that support the greater good and bring about change.

This includes refraining from the improper disposal of waste or old medicine, but also no longer using plastic bags for shopping, but rather bringing your own bags. Reuse is the way to go.

We have compiled a list in the Fact Check of what else you can do and backed these facts up with the most up-to-date figures. It is worth taking a look.

Support Wasser 3.0

So far the project has only been financed in the research area with research funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs (BMWi). However, if you consider that Wasser 3.0 is more than a pure research and development project, it is easy to imagine that our individualism and our initiative is not enough, but that financial support is also necessary in order to become active in a holistic manner.

In addition to the process development, a significant part of our tasks is to sensitize people regarding the protection of our most vital resource, water. For this, we need goal-oriented public relations your support.

What is Wastewater Treatment?

Centralized wastewater remediation collects all wastewater flows from a specific catchment area via the sewer system. The collected wastewater is transported to the sewage treatment plants. There it is processed centrally. Unfortunately, not all stressors can already be eliminated in the scope of communal sewage remediation. Wasser 3.0 can contribute to removing these stressors in different purification stages.

Purify the wastewater where it is produced!

That not only applies to remote properties that are not connected to the centralized sewage system, but also to industrial wastewater (process water), contaminated surface water, leachate and groundwater. Everywhere where pollutants accrue, Wasser 3.0 provides a tailored possibility to remove the stressors.

Our decentralized solutions also always include campaigns to sensitize the people to prevent the contamination of the water in the first place.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Tour

We take you on an "Expedition" into the WWTP EW Landau. The team of Wasser 3.0 has been active in research and development for several years. Now, it’s time for us to take you to the sewage treatment plant. To learn exactly what happens where, see the video!
