What is Wasser 3.0?
Behind Wasser 3.0 is a large-scale project, which can be divided into different pillars. Wasser 3.0 stands for research & development as well as education & communication, but also for the three Ps:
Projects, Products and People
In 2012 the research project was born at the University of Koblenz-Landau. At that time, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Katrin Schuhen, the founder and provider of the idea, defined the very clear goal of wanting to save the world. In the meantime, the idea has grown into a concept, project and product and the broader view shaped the poster child and became the working basis of the project Wasser 3.0.
Together with her team of doctoral candidates and students at the University of Koblenz-Landau and the cooperation partners; abcr GmbH, which has been involved from the very beginning, and Zahnen Technik GmbH, which has been committed to the plant construction since 2017, the products and applications are developed.
With Wasser 3.0 – StressFix the first efficient procedure to remove pharmaceuticals from the wastewater emerged. Independent of the path of entry (e.g. via everyday actions, industry or via slurry from farms), all forms of undesirable substances are eliminated from the water with an innovative approach using so called inorganic-organic hybrid silica gels.
However, Wasser 3.0 involves more than just the removal of pharmaceuticals. In the meantime, independent of the type and quantity of the unwanted substances, thanks to the continuous development of the hybrid silica gels, tailored materials can be synthesized, which can remove the organic (e.g. pharmaceuticals, pesticides), inorganic (e.g. lead, cadmium, mercury) and so called inert (e.g. microplastic) stressors decentralized (at the point of origin) or centralized (in wastewater treatment plants).
