Digital-real education space WASoMI

What's it about?

The digital-real education space WASoMI (waters without microplastics in German: WASser ohne MIkroplastik) offers facts, backgrounds and contexts on the topics of polymers, plastics, and microplastics. The overriding question is how our many useful everyday helpers made of polymers became the global environmental problem microplastics. And about how we can prevent it in the future.

The education room is open to anyone interested, regardless of age. It is free of charge and without advertising. It is currently available in German, translations are planned.

It was made possible by a grant from the Deutsche Postcode Lotterie, other small and large donations and the dedicated efforts of our cooperation partners.

A room of possibilities

The digital-real education space conveys knowledge in a virtual space similar to an exhibition. One can move freely within it. One's own interests guide the way through the offered content.

Users are actively involved. They are offered a wide range of opportunities to build up knowledge. Context and cross-linking of the content are in the foreground.



WASoMI LAB and Team WASoMI are two components of the education space. In the lab, research and experimentation around microplastics can be done. Team WASoMI are specific learning modules for use in secondary schools.

Didactic considerations

WASoMI is based on a networking and cross-thematic educational concept. A scientific-technological complex topic with high social relevance is approached from different directions with new teaching/learning approaches. Especially the digital-real combination creates high variability in learning environment and knowledge transfer.

Our goals:

  • To achieve more impactful action for waters without microplastics through more knowledge about the problem and its levers.
  • To demonstrate the relevance of the natural and environmental sciences to our everyday actions.
  • To do justice to the complex topic of microplastics in a scientifically sound way and at the same time be understandable in a low-threshold way. Without oversimplifying.
