Although it has led to improvements in water quality across Europe since its introduction in 1991, a lot of pollution is still not restricted or regulated, e.g. Micropollutants and microplastics. Therefore, at the end of 2022, the EU published a proposal for a revised directive on the treatment of urban wastewater.
