Global Map of Microplastics

Mapping microplastics in our waters together

The Global Map of Microplastics shows where, and how heavily, rivers, lakes and coasts are polluted with microplastics. The data come from sampling campaigns with schools, citizens and partners. We analyse all samples in the Wasser 3.0 laboratory using the Wasser 3.0 detect MP-1 method.

Why do we take samples from entire water bodies or sections of water bodies?

A single sample only shows one place at one point in time. That is why we sample entire rivers or continuous sections according to a uniform protocol. Only then does it become visible where microplastics enter the water. These hotspots are the basis for targeted measures to protect our waters.

How can I get involved?

Schools and private individuals can take part in sampling our focus waters. Participation is free of charge for schools as long as funds from donations, sponsorship and school sponsorships are available.

  1. Download the expression of interest form (PDF)
  2. Complete it and send it to wasomi@wasserdreinull.de.
  3. We will get in touch as soon as sampling for your water is planned and funded.

Process, costs and FAQ: Citizen science for schools and citizens

Who is the Global Map of Microplastics for?

  1. Schools and educational institutions
  2. Engaged citizens
  3. Research institutions
  4. Municipalities and authorities
  5. Environmental organisations
  6. Politics
  7. You and me!

The Global Map of Microplastics connects science and education. Our initiative WASoMI (Water without Microplastics) offers special programs for schools and educational institutions.

Together, we can make microplastic pollution visible and develop solutions. Every data point counts, and every analysis brings us closer to a plastic-free future.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have my local body of water sampled on its own?
No. We only sample entire rivers or continuous sections. Suggest your body of water as a future focus water in the expression of interest form.

Do I need scientific knowledge?
No. Sampling follows step-by-step instructions. Wasser 3.0 carries out the laboratory analysis.

How are the data used?
All results are publicly visible on the map. They are available to research, education, municipalities and policymakers.

How can I support the Global Map?
With a donation, a school sponsorship or as a sponsor (sponsor information, PDF). Donations help fund sampling with schools, among other things.
