Contact lenses and microplastics
4. August 2025On the trail of microplastic hotspots: Wasser 3.0 at the Ocean Race Europe in Kiel
For four days, the Kiel Fjord will be the center of sustainable sailing and marine research. From August 7 to 10, 2025, the Wasser 3.0 team will be on site at the Ocean Race Europe, the Ocean Race Summit, and at the exhibition stand with our partner Zurich Germany. Together, we will accompany Boris Herrmann and his team Malizia on their way to the starting line - and use this unique opportunity to advance our mission against marine microplastic pollution.

Science meets sailing: a perfect symbiosis
The Ocean Race Europe is more than just a sailing race - it is a platform for environmental awareness and innovation. This is exactly where we come in: While the sailors prepare for the battle against wind and waves, we continue our fight against an invisible threat to our oceans: microplastics.
With our Global Map of Microplastics, we have already collected data worldwide and identified microplastic hotspots. Now we are bringing this research directly to Kiel, where water sports and marine conservation meet.

Hands-on research in the Kiel Fjord
Equipped with our innovative analytic kits, we will be out and about around Kiel together with interested visitors. We will take these water samples on site and analyze them afterwards using our groundbreaking microplastic detection technology, which has already been successfully applied for numerous rivers in Germany and Europe.
What makes our technology so special?
Our patented solutions make it possible to detect and remove microplastics quickly and precisely. These scientifically proven processes makes us one of the leading innovators in the field of water purification. The findings from our investigations flow directly into our scientific publications, such as our recent study on microplastics in German waters.
Visit us at our stand
The OCEAN LIVE PARK event area is located along the Kiellinie between the Bluecherbrücke and Foerdeblick Park.
We will be there for you on the following days:
- August 8, 2025: 10:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Zurich Germany stand
- August 9, 2025: 2:30 - 6:00 p.m. at the Zurich Germany stand
At the stand you will have the unique opportunity to ask all your questions about microplastics in water. Our team of experts will explain to you:
- How microplastics enter our waters
- What impacts they have on the marine environment
- How our innovative removal technology works
- Which concrete solutions can lead us out of the microplastics crisis
You can also be there live as we track microplastic hotspots and collect new data for our Global Map of Microplastics.
Book signing: "Rebel of Water"
A special highlight: the author of the book ”Rebellin des Wassers", Katrin Schuhen, will be there live! In her non-fiction book, she presents solutions on how we can save our most precious resource. The book contains insights into research and innovation, but also motivation, encouragement, and transfer. You are cordially invited to have your copy of the book signed at the trade fair stand. Experience the pioneer of microplastics research in person and be motivated by her inspiring story.
Partnerships for marine protection
Together with Zurich Germany and Team Malizia, we are showing how business, sport and science can work hand in hand. These collaborations are essential for raising awareness of the microplastics problem and developing sustainable solutions.
Boris Herrmann, who also wrote the foreword for “Rebellin des Wassers”, and his team are exemplary of a new generation of athletes who are using their platform to raise awareness of environmental issues. During the Ocean Race, the team continuously collects data on the state of our oceans - a perfect complement to our research work.
Become part of the solution
The four days in Kiel (August 7 to 10, 2025) are more than just an event. They are a call to action. Every drop of water examined, every sample analyzed, and every conversation held brings us one step closer to cleaner oceans.
Visit us at the Zurich Germany booth on August 8 (10:00 - 13:30) or August 9 (14:30 - 18:00) and find out how you can be part of this important mission. Find out about our research projects, discover our educational programs or learn more about opportunities for collaboration.
Science at your fingertips
Get inspired by the fascination of marine research and experience how state-of-the-art technology is helping to solve one of the most pressing environmental problems of our time. Our findings from Kiel will flow directly into our current research and help to further improve the global data situation on microplastics.
Together for clean oceans - together for a sustainable future.
