Microplastics and Tire Wear

Tire wear particles are communicated as one of the main sources of direct microplastic (Microplastics Type B) entry into the environment. But is this the truth? Fact is: Currently, no standardized analytical method for tire wear particles exists; only rough estimations can be made. The real extent is unknown. This blog discusses the issue of tire wear particles as a major microplastic source and the status quo regarding detection and regulations.

Outlook for World Water Day

In order to draw society's attention to the great importance of water and water availability, the UN decided in 1993 to declare March 22 every year as World Water Day. This is to both celebrate the importance of water and draw attention to the ongoing water and sanitation crisis. The motto of this year's World Water Day is "Accelerating Change together." Since every day is World Water Day for us, there is also a competition in addition to the outlook.

EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive

The EU directive on urban wastewater (Council Directive 91/271/EEC) is decisive for the control and prevention of pollution. Although it has led to improvements in water quality across Europe since its introduction in 1991, a lot of pollution is still not restricted or regulated, e.g. Micropollutants and microplastics. Therefore, at the end of 2022, the EU published a proposal for a revised directive on the treatment of urban wastewater. More about this in the blog.

With Nordic Water GmbH from Neuss, we were able to gain a strong cooperation partner for our pilot project at the Landau-Mörlheim sewage treatment plant, which supported us with technical components.
